In County Durham during the 1984 miners' strike, 11-year-old Billy Elliot drifts out of his boxing class and into a ballet lesson, discovering a talent that upends life at home. Jamie Bell is Billy, a working-class kid caught between an unexpected pull toward dance and the pressures bearing down on his family. With help from Mrs. Wilkinson (Julie Walters), he begins training for an audition for the Royal Ballet School, while Gary Lewis's worn-down father and Billy's older brother push back against what they think a boy should be.
