Nine animated stories widen the world of The Matrix, moving from the war between humans and machines to smaller, stranger episodes inside the simulation. Some chapters fill in the backstory behind the Matrix itself; others follow hackers, athletes, detectives, and ordinary people brushing up against glitches in a controlled reality. Carrie-Anne Moss returns to voice Trinity, and Keanu Reeves is heard as Neo in one segment. Drawn by a slate of Japanese anime directors and mixing hand-drawn work with CG, the film shifts its style from story to story while staying inside the cyberpunk mythology of the Wachowskis' universe.
