Free State of Jones
DramaWarWestern140 min
In 1863 Mississippi, Matthew McConaughey is Newt Knight, a Confederate army medic who opposes slavery and would rather tend the wounded than fight. After a death in his family sends him back to Jones County, Newt is branded a deserter and forced into the swamps, where runaway slaves and poor farmers are also hiding from the war and its demands. With Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mahershala Ali among those caught up in his cause, the film follows the beginnings of an armed revolt against the Confederacy in Jones County during the Civil War and the uneasy period that follows.
