Andrew Garfield is Desmond Doss, a WWII Army medic whose religious convictions keep him from carrying or firing a weapon even as he’s sent into the Battle of Okinawa. Based on a true story, the film follows Doss through basic training, resistance from fellow soldiers and commanders, and the chaos of frontline service as he insists on serving without killing. Mel Gibson directs the stateside scenes and the Okinawa combat with a blunt contrast between Doss’s pacifism and the violence around him, while Vince Vaughn and Sam Worthington are among the officers forced to reckon with his refusal.
