While canyoneering alone in Utah, Aron Ralston is trapped when a fallen boulder pins his arm in an isolated canyon, leaving him cut off from help and running out of options. James Franco is Ralston, carrying the film through the physical strain, the mounting desperation, and the flashbacks that fill in the life beyond the canyon walls. Danny Boyle directs the true story with most of its focus fixed tightly on one man’s attempt to survive, while Kate Mara and Amber Tamblyn appear in brief supporting turns.
