Enrico Mattei’s rise from anti-Nazi resistance fighter to the head of Italy’s state oil empire drives this portrait of power, industry, and an official story under scrutiny. Gian Maria Volonté is Mattei, who helps build A.G.I.P. and then ENI into a major force in postwar Italy before dying in a 1962 plane crash near Milan. Luigi Squarzina is among the figures circling his ascent and its aftermath. Once authorities declare the crash an accident, journalists begin digging into other possible explanations, widening the film from one man’s career to the political and economic interests gathered around him.
