They Won't Believe Me

DramaRomance95 min

On trial for murdering his girlfriend, stockbroker Larry Ballentine takes the stand and insists the story behind her death is far messier than it sounds. Robert Young is Larry, recounting a trail of affairs, evasions, and chance turns as the courtroom weighs whether any of it can be believed. Susan Hayward and Jane Greer figure into his version of events, part of the shifting web of relationships and accusations surrounding the case. Directed by Irving Pichel, the film frames its noir story through testimony, with Larry’s polished account constantly rubbing against the doubt hanging over him.
