John Malkovich is Tom Ripley, a polished killer living comfortably in a Veneto villa with Luisa, his harpsichord-playing girlfriend, when a visitor from Berlin’s underworld pulls him toward another murder. Instead of taking the job himself, Ripley fixes on Jonathan Trevanny, a local picture framer who is dying of cancer and has little to leave his wife and son. Dougray Scott’s Jonathan is exactly the kind of decent, anxious man Ripley knows how to study, prod, and corner as a criminal scheme turns into a dangerous contest over who stays in control.
