Poland, 1945: Mathilde, a young French Red Cross doctor, is treating war survivors when a nun brings her to a secluded convent with a hidden crisis. Lou de Laâge is Mathilde, an outsider asked to help several sisters who are pregnant and concealing it within the strict rhythms of religious life. At the center of the convent stands the Rev. Mother (Agata Kulesza), determined to protect the order as fear of scandal and the presence of Soviet troops press in from outside. As Mathilde returns in secret, medical urgency and monastic discipline begin to collide.
