American mathematician David Sumner moves with his English wife, Amy, to the rural Cornwall village where she grew up, hoping to leave his hectic life in the United States behind. Dustin Hoffman is David, an uneasy outsider among the local men; Susan George’s Amy is tied to the place in ways her husband doesn’t fully grasp, including a history with Charlie, one of the workers hired to fix their house. In the isolated countryside, small slights and public humiliations give way to intimidation, and the couple’s home becomes the center of a mounting confrontation.
