In a small California gold rush camp, a mysterious preacher arrives just as a mining company starts driving independent prospectors off their land. Clint Eastwood is the stranger, known only as the Preacher, who steps between the village and a wealthy operator determined to take control of the mine. Michael Moriarty and Carrie Snodgress are among the prospectors caught in the feud, while Eastwood, directing as well, frames the showdown with biblical overtones and sudden eruptions of violence.
