The Straight Story

Richard Farnsworth is Alvin Straight, a retired Iowa farmer and widower who learns that his distant brother Lyle has suffered a stroke in Wisconsin. Unable to drive and determined to see him, Alvin hitches a trailer to his old John Deere riding mower and heads out on the shoulder of the highway, inching across Iowa toward the Mississippi and beyond. Drawn from a true story and directed by David Lynch, the film follows Alvin through farm country, weather, breakdowns, and brief encounters with strangers as he tries to mend a long-fractured family bond.
