Out-of-work sportswriter Eddie Willis takes a job with crooked fight promoter Nick Benko and finds himself selling a lie to the public. Humphrey Bogart is Eddie, a respected boxing writer whose name helps Benko build Toro Moreno, a huge but untested Argentinian fighter, into a heavyweight contender through fixed bouts and relentless publicity. Rod Steiger’s Benko treats the sport as a racket, shuffling Toro from one arranged fight to the next while Eddie watches the con tighten around a naïve boxer who doesn’t understand the odds stacked against him.
