Kirk Douglas is Midge Kelly, an ambitious boxer whose climb from obscurity to the top of the sport comes with a mounting human cost. He fights his way into title contention through talent, nerve, and naked self-interest, using every opening he can find and steadily pushing away the people who helped him get started. As Midge’s career rises, the film keeps its focus on the damage done outside the ring as much as the punishment inside it. Marilyn Maxwell and Arthur Kennedy are among the figures caught in his orbit as success hardens into isolation.
