Nicolas Cage is Joe Ransom, a hard-living ex-con running a lumber crew in the contemporary Southern backwoods. When he gives work to a 15-year-old boy, the job becomes something closer to refuge: Tye Sheridan’s quiet teenager shows up ready to work, but home means an abusive father and a constant threat of violence. Joe is trying to keep his own temper and criminal past in check, yet stepping between the boy and his family pulls him back toward trouble. The story stays close to bars, woods, and work camps, where protection and violence sit side by side.
