After marrying the charming Gregory and moving into her family’s London mansion, Paula Anton begins to fear she’s losing her mind as footsteps echo overhead, objects vanish, and the gaslights dim for no clear reason. Ingrid Bergman is Paula, a young wife caught between grief and doubt, while Charles Boyer’s Gregory keeps insisting that nothing is wrong. Joseph Cotten turns up as a watchful stranger with questions about the house and Paula’s past. In the closed-off rooms of the old home, small disturbances and constant reassurances turn married life into a careful campaign of control.
