Carlos Gallardo is a young mariachi traveling to a Mexican border town with his guitar case, hoping to find work and continue his family’s tradition. He arrives just as another man with a guitar case — a gunman the town is already hunting — has drawn the attention of a drug lord and his crew. Mistaken for the killer, the musician is chased through bars, streets, and hideouts as a simple search for work turns into a fight to stay alive. In Robert Rodriguez’s debut, the setup hinges on a neat piece of mistaken identity and a town already primed for violence.
