A wandering mariachi drifts into a Mexican border town carrying a guitar case and a blood feud. He is hunting the drug lord who murdered his lover, but his reputation arrives before he does, setting off panic among gangsters, bartenders, and hired killers who think they know what kind of man has just walked through the door. As the search closes in, the town turns into a trap of ambushes, mistaken identities, and escalating gun battles. Antonio Banderas plays El Mariachi as a man driven less by money than by vengeance, and when he meets a bookstore owner played by Salma Hayek, his mission gains one more person caught in the crossfire.
