In 18th-century France, Glenn Close is the Marquise de Merteuil, an aristocrat who recruits her former lover, Vicomte de Valmont (John Malkovich), for a scheme of seduction and revenge. She wants him to target the young woman promised to one of her ex-lovers, with an intimate reward waiting if he succeeds. What begins as a wager turns into a dense web of letters, social maneuvering, and shifting power among the nobility, where reputation matters as much as desire and every encounter carries an angle.
