Caught up in the patriotic fever of World War I, a German schoolboy and his classmates leave the classroom for the trenches, expecting duty and glory. What they find instead is mud, shellfire, hunger, and the daily terror of staying alive under bombardment. As the war grinds on, friendship becomes one of the few things keeping the young soldiers going, even as each attack strips away another illusion about honor and heroism. Lew Ayres is at the center of the story as the boy who watches his ideals collapse, while veteran troops under hard-edged men like Kat show him what survival really costs.
