Richard Dreyfuss is Jack Noah, a struggling actor shooting on location in Parador when the country’s dictator dies on the eve of an election. Raul Julia’s polished, dangerous police chief orders Jack to step into the dead ruler’s uniform and keep up the illusion for cameras, ministers, and a nervous public. What starts as pure survival turns into a political performance, complete with speeches, staged appearances, and a growing attachment to the dictator’s inner circle. Among them is Altagracia (Sonia Braga), the late leader’s mistress, whose ties to Parador’s poor complicate Jack’s part in the deception.
