Beverly Donofrio is a teenager in 1965 with plans to become a writer when an early pregnancy and a rushed marriage push her life onto a different track. Drew Barrymore's Beverly spends the next years raising her son, trying to hold onto her ambitions, and managing a husband whose easy charm gives way to instability; Steve Zahn is Ray, the baby's father, drifting in and out under the weight of addiction. James Woods appears as Beverly's police-sergeant father, a stern presence in a family life that keeps closing in as she tries to build something for herself.
