Robert Duvall is THX 1138, a technician in a subterranean future where a totalitarian state keeps citizens compliant with mandatory drugs, constant surveillance, and tightly controlled daily life. When he stops taking the medication and begins a secret relationship with a woman (Maggie McOmie), the first stirrings of private feeling put him at odds with the system around him. George Lucas’s debut feature imagines a white, computerized society of shaved heads, hologram confessions, and android police, where even desire is regulated and every deviation is tracked.
