When surveillance specialist Tom Welles is hired to find out whether a brutal 8mm reel documents an actual murder, the small-town private investigator is pulled from his quiet home life into New York City’s sex-industry underground. Nicolas Cage is Welles, precise and increasingly consumed by the case. With help from Joaquin Phoenix’s Max, a video-store clerk with the right local connections, he follows a trail through peep shows, back rooms, and dead ends in search of a victim he’s never met. As the investigation deepens, Welles’s work starts to overtake his family life and his sense of distance from what he’s seeing.
