Citizenfour

Documentary114 min

In June 2013, filmmaker Laura Poitras travels to Hong Kong with reporter Glenn Greenwald to meet the source who has been sending her encrypted emails under the name “Citizenfour.” The source is Edward Snowden, a former intelligence contractor preparing to reveal classified information about NSA surveillance. With Poitras’s camera in the room, the film stays close to those first hotel-room conversations, the checking of documents, and the tense stretch before the story breaks publicly, following the leak as it moves from private disclosure to an international news event.
