After his wife’s death, Marlon Brando is Paul, a middle-aged American adrift in Paris who begins an anonymous sexual relationship with Jeanne, a young woman he meets by chance. Maria Schneider’s Jeanne enters the affair with its own rules: no names, no past, no promises beyond the apartment where they meet. As grief, desire, and humiliation press in from the outside world, their arrangement grows harder to contain. Paris is both backdrop and pressure point, with the film moving between private rooms and public streets as these two strangers keep trying to leave themselves at the door.
