Book editor George Caldwell boards a train from Los Angeles to Chicago expecting a quiet trip, then becomes convinced he’s seen a murdered man thrown from the Silver Streak. Gene Wilder is George, a nervous amateur sleuth whose attempts to get help only leave him looking unreliable and put him in the killer’s path. Along the way, he’s drawn to Jill Clayburgh’s Hilly Burns, a fellow passenger whose flirtation and mystery deepen the trouble around him. The film keeps its action rolling through dining cars, sleeping compartments, and station stops as George scrambles to prove what he saw.
