Shadow of the Vampire

DramaHorror95 min

While shooting Nosferatu in 1922, director F.W. Murnau has arranged for an unusually convincing Count Orlok: Max Schreck may be a vampire. John Malkovich is Murnau, intent on finishing his film even as the production begins to fray, and Willem Dafoe’s Schreck drifts through the set as a pale, unsettling presence that leaves the cast and crew increasingly uneasy. The story imagines the making of the silent horror landmark as its own dark legend, with period touches like intertitles and stylized visuals that echo early cinema while the line between performance and monstrosity grows thin.
