In the American South on the eve of the Civil War, a young woman’s life is upended when a family secret strips away the world she thought she belonged to. Forced into the brutal economy of slavery, she is sold and taken into a household where power, desire, and status are always shifting. Her connection with the man who buys her, played by Clark Gable, grows more tangled as the country moves toward open conflict. As war closes in, the story follows the upheaval around them and the people trapped inside it, including those who see in the chaos a chance to claim dignity and freedom, among them a key figure played by Sidney Poitier.
