Birdman of Alcatraz
CrimeDrama147 min
After killing a prison guard, Robert Stroud is sentenced to life in solitary, where isolation nearly breaks him until he finds an injured sparrow in the exercise yard. Burt Lancaster is Stroud, a violent inmate who turns caring for birds into a discipline, then a field of study, educating himself behind bars and becoming a noted ornithologist. John Frankenheimer traces that transformation across years of prison life, with Karl Malden and Thelma Ritter among the figures in Stroud’s orbit as his work brings him a new sense of purpose from inside his cell.
