After the polar ice caps melt and leave Earth a nearly all-water planet, a mutant drifter (Kevin Costner) is pulled into protecting Helen and the young Enola after an escape from a floating island prison. Jeanne Tripplehorn's Helen joins him aboard his patched-together vessel, but they’re soon hunted across open ocean by a pirate leader, with Dennis Hopper stalking close behind as the Deacon. The chase turns on a rumor of Dryland and the map tattooed on Enola’s back, moving through a world of barter, scavenged fuel, floating settlements, and constant exposure to the sea.
