Sweet Smell of Success

Drama97 min

Broadway gossip columnist J.J. Hunsecker uses his New York newspaper column to shape careers, crush reputations, and keep a grip on the people around him. Burt Lancaster is Hunsecker, a Manhattan power broker who turns to press agent Sidney Falco when his younger sister Susan starts seeing an aspiring jazz guitarist he wants out of the picture. Tony Curtis’s Sidney lives on favors, planted items, and access, and the assignment pulls him deeper into a world of nightclub tables, press rooms, and whispered deals. Shot in 1950s New York, the film follows the blur between publicity, intimidation, and private vendetta.
