The Last Picture Show

DramaRomance119 min

In an early-1950s Texas town that seems to be drying up around them, best friends Sonny and Duane approach high school graduation with no clear way forward. Timothy Bottoms is Sonny, quieter and more uncertain, while Jeff Bridges’s Duane is the handsome local favorite, caught up with Jacy (Cybill Shepherd) as he talks about heading for the army. Sonny, meanwhile, begins an affair with the coach’s wife, and both boys start to measure their chances of leaving against the pull of home. Peter Bogdanovich films the town in black and white, with the movie theater and its regulars standing at the center of a place already fading.
