Talking About Trees
Documentary93 min
Four veteran Sudanese filmmakers reunite in Khartoum with an ambitious plan: reopen the dilapidated Halfaia Cinema and bring moviegoing back to a city where screens have gone dark. Ibrahim Shaddad and Suleiman Mohamed Ibrahim are among the old friends at the center of the effort, alongside Altayeb Mahdi and Manar Al Hilo, all of whom studied film abroad in the 1960s and 1970s before founding the Sudanese Film Group in 1989. As they push through paperwork, disrepair and the long aftereffects of exile, the documentary stays close to their camaraderie, their memories and the practical work of trying to restore a public space for cinema.
