In China’s Tang dynasty, an emperor’s control over the throne reaches into every corner of his household, where suspicion, poison, and family resentment turn palace ritual into a power struggle. Chow Yun-Fat is the ruler at the center of the court, tightening his grip on an already divided royal family, while Gong Li’s empress moves through the palace under watch, her marriage and her sons tied to the same contest for control.
