Harold Lloyd is a small-town striver in the city, working as a department-store clerk and trying to project a success he hasn’t quite reached. When he arranges a publicity stunt built around climbing the outside of a downtown high-rise, a tangle of circumstances leaves him making the ascent himself, inching past ledges, windows, and a giant clock far above the street. Mildred Davis appears opposite Lloyd as the woman he hopes to impress, while the film moves from everyday workplace comedy to increasingly intricate physical gags and vertigo-inducing stunts that became central to Lloyd’s screen image.
