After a Russian naval exercise goes catastrophically wrong in the Barents Sea in August 2000, the K-141 Kursk sinks with 118 crew members aboard. As a handful of sailors struggle to stay alive inside the damaged submarine, their families on shore are met with silence, confusion, and delay. Colin Firth is a British naval officer pushing for permission to mount a rescue, while Matthias Schoenaerts is one of the trapped crew members waiting for help that may not come in time. The film follows the disaster from both inside the sub and through the official resistance and bureaucratic failure surrounding it.
