Newly arrived in McFarland, a hard-pressed farm town in California’s Central Valley, coach Jim White (Kevin Costner) notices something other schools have missed: several boys at his predominantly Latino high school have unusual speed and endurance. As he pulls together a cross-country team in 1987, the story follows the uneasy fit between White’s family and the community, and the bond that grows between the coach and his runners. Maria Bello is White’s wife, with the film keeping one eye on home life and the other on a group of students whose talent begins to turn a small-town program into something much bigger.
