James Cagney is Jeremy Rodock, a horse rancher whose answer to rustling is swift frontier justice. When Steve Miller arrives from Pennsylvania, he struggles to adjust to Rodock’s hard, unforgiving code and soon finds himself drawn to Jocasta (Irene Papas), the Greek woman close to the rancher. As Rodock’s rule over his land and the people around him grows harder to ignore, the story turns on clashing ideas of justice, loyalty, and what life looks like under a man who hangs rustlers on sight.
