After a feud between cattlemen and sheep ranchers leaves Connie Dickason without her fiancé and in control of his ranch, she decides to run the property herself rather than submit to the valley’s reigning boss. Veronica Lake’s Connie hires recovering alcoholic Dave Nash, and Joel McCrea is the foreman trying to keep her operation alive without answering violence with more violence. Across the valley, Frank Ivey leans on intimidation, arson, and armed men to force her out. As Connie builds a crew from Ivey’s enemies, the fight over grazing land turns into a broader struggle over power, loyalty, and whose rules will hold.
