Jake Gyllenhaal is Lou Bloom, a desperate drifter who finds an opening in Los Angeles’s after-hours news economy: chasing police scanners, filming crashes and crime scenes, and selling the footage to local TV stations. As Lou pushes deeper into the city’s nocturnal violence, his ambition starts to erase the line between witness and participant. Nina (Rene Russo), a veteran of local TV news, recognizes the value of Lou’s footage and helps draw him further into a world where sirens, blood, and exclusive video all carry a price.
