In late-1970s New Jersey, con artist Irving Rosenfeld and his partner Sydney Prosser are caught by an ambitious FBI agent and pushed into a widening sting aimed at politicians, power brokers, and the Mafia. Christian Bale is Irving, a careful operator now working under Bradley Cooper’s reckless Richie DiMaso, while Amy Adams is Sydney, his partner in both romance and fraud. As the case closes in on local mayor Carmine Polito, Jeremy Renner gives the political target a personal stake in the scheme, and Jennifer Lawrence’s Rosalyn, Irving’s volatile wife, threatens to pull the whole arrangement off balance.
