After serving a jail sentence, Tom Joad comes home to Oklahoma and finds his family farm gone, lost to foreclosure in the Depression. Henry Fonda is Tom, catching up with the Joads at his uncle’s place just before they load their lives onto a truck and head for California in search of work. Jane Darwell’s Ma Joad keeps the family moving as the road west becomes a picture of migrant hardship: packed camps, scarce jobs, and a country where banks and landowners have pushed ordinary families off the land.
