A serial killer is stalking children in a German city, and the fear he leaves behind spreads far beyond the crimes themselves. As the police flood the streets with raids, checkpoints, and roundups, their pressure disrupts the city’s underworld so badly that the criminals decide to hunt the murderer themselves. What follows becomes a two-sided manhunt, with informants, surveillance, and mounting panic closing in from every direction. Peter Lorre plays Hans Beckert, the hunted man at the center of it, while Fritz Lang’s early sound thriller tracks how a city turns on itself when the search for one killer draws in police, thieves, beggars, and bystanders alike.
