The Personal History of David Copperfield

ComedyDrama119 min

In 1840s England, David Copperfield grows from an unhappy childhood into a young man trying to find his place — and his voice — in a crowded, unpredictable world. Dev Patel is David, charting the twists of family upheaval, social climbing, misfortune, and the first stirrings of life as a storyteller. Around him, Tilda Swinton’s Betsey Trotwood and Hugh Laurie’s Mr. Dick bring a sly, eccentric edge to the people who shape his path. Armando Iannucci reworks Dickens with a light touch and a busy ensemble, keeping David’s coming-of-age story funny, bruising, and closely tied to the act of turning life into narrative.
