At New York City’s High School of Performing Arts, a group of teenagers spend their days auditioning, training, and chasing the version of success they imagine for themselves. Alan Parker follows the students from their first tryouts through years of classes, rehearsals, friendships, and setbacks, as musicians, actors, and dancers learn how much work sits behind talent. Irene Cara is one of the young performers trying to stand out in a crowded school, with Gene Anthony Ray among the dancers pushing for a place of his own. Hallways, classrooms, rehearsal rooms, and city streets all become part of the same rush toward the stage.
