Lenny

Drama111 min

Dustin Hoffman is Lenny Bruce, a 1950s club comic whose act shifts from tired one-liners to confrontational, explicit material aimed at social hypocrisy, religion, sex, and public morality. As Bruce becomes a counterculture figure in 1960s America, the attention around him includes arrests, obscenity charges, and courtroom battles over what can be said onstage. Valerie Perrine's Honey, a stripper who becomes his wife, is bound up in both his rise and the chaos around him. Bob Fosse directs in black and white, weaving nightclub performances and testimony-style interviews into a portrait of a comedian pushing at the limits of what the establishment would tolerate.
