The Conversation

CrimeDramaMysteryThriller114 min

Gene Hackman is Harry Caul, a secretive surveillance expert whose latest wiretap leaves him convinced that the couple he’s been following may be marked for murder. As Harry listens again and again to a single recorded conversation, professional detachment gives way to guilt, suspicion, and a growing fear that he has misunderstood what he heard. Francis Ford Coppola centers the film on Harry’s solitude and obsession, with John Cazale and Harrison Ford among the faces circling the case. The story stays close to microphones, tapes, and the uneasy gap between overhearing something and knowing what it means.
