Joe Gideon is a top Broadway choreographer and film director whose days are split between rehearsing a new stage production and editing a movie, while pills, booze, and exhaustion steadily wear him down. Roy Scheider is Gideon, driving himself through auditions, screening rooms, hospital visits, and the wreckage of his personal life. Around him, Ann Reinking, Jessica Lange, and Ben Vereen move through the professional and intimate spaces he can’t keep separate. Drawing on his own career, Bob Fosse frames show business as a blur of tap numbers, cutting rooms, sexual bravado, and collapsing health, with fantasy and memory folding into Gideon’s overworked inner life.
