A string of murders in San Francisco appears to recreate the crimes of notorious serial killers, forcing an agoraphobic criminal psychologist and a homicide detective into an uneasy alliance. Sigourney Weaver is the traumatized expert, now largely confined to her apartment after an earlier case shattered her sense of safety, while Holly Hunter's detective works the streets and the evidence. As each killing echoes a different infamous pattern, the investigation becomes a race to read a murderer obsessed with method, notoriety, and the women trying to stop him.
